Project Evaluation

The theme I began researching for my dissertation was ‘Fetishism in Fashion’, I chose this because I was also researching the same topic for my Industrial project. However, I found the subject too literal to research find inspiration and information for a discussion. I then began to look into the similar subject of porn, and porn-culture in the fashion industry. After carrying out a number of research I found a lot out about the objectification of women in advertising not just in fashion, unfortunately this meant my research deviated from Fashion particularly and more into Porn culture as a general.

I’ve had to reign myself in with my theory, as well as in my studio practice as I find so much information and so much inspiration which confuses people. I have realised I struggle to pitch my own visions verbally to people and it’s not always easy to understand my thought process, so rather than document my work as a stream of consciousness I am now having to make a conscious effort to lead viewers through my projects smoothly and consider the journey to make it more interpretable.

I decided to focus on what I found most interesting through my research which was women as sexual consumers and the marketing of sexuality. Thus coming up with the title Fashion and Passion: The sexualisation of women through porn culture and the marketing of sexuality with Fashion. I found this interesting because it offers a different view on sexuality than feminism.

Although I found a significant amount of useful research, I really struggled to make sense of some of what I had found. I felt like I was reading loads and loads of stuff and not absorbing it. I definitely learned a lot more from watching documentary’s and interviews and generally taking a bit more time to look at everyday things and retrieve the sexual content.

OVERVIEW –

o   I really enjoyed this project as I had an interesting and very current subject. I learned a lot both for and against porn, porn culture, and masturbation.

o   I struggled with all the reading of articles as I couldn’t absorb and understand everything, I have definitely discovered a learn better when being explained things, so from watching documentaries was very useful, looking at images. Things that are very visual and audial.

o   Although I done a lot of research I could definitely benefited from doing a lot more, although I understand that I have to give myself a cut-off point. Which is exactly what I have to do with my studio practice as well otherwise I end up inundated with information and numerous different ideas running consecutively.

o   I’ve learned the importance of redrafting, this project I definitely did work a lot harder and do a lot more. I tried to take advantage of drafting and taking on board comments and pointers from others. However, I think I definitely could have benefited from a few more drafts.

o   Sign posting really helped me organise my essay and link each point together, this enabled me to make my essay flow a lot easier and smoother.

o   I finally feel like I understand what is expected from me with this project and how to approach it. Unfortunately, this is my last project, but I’ll definitely be able to take the new skills I have learned with me into my future work.
